Sifting soil is one of the manual choirs of gardening that we all have to take part in.  We buy or construct a hand-sifting box and shake our soil ingredients into the perfect size and texture.  I have small hand-made ones and small purchased ones as well that I have used for several years.  Once I got full steam into compost making though, I figured I better do something to automate the process some…I am getting older and not the spring chicken I used to be. So after checking some videos out again, I settled on a combined design and went at it.  The height and angle are adjustable although I never adjust anything.  I made the big box with a 1/2 inch screen and an inner optional box with 1/4 inch so I can add that for the finished sift.  So after the compost pile has been working for 5-6 months, turned a few times, I then sift it and use that “black gold” for adding to the planting rows and transplant holes.

If you want me to give a “class” on composting and sifting… I am happy to do that.  Best to get a few people so we can have a good group.
